I’d like to point out that while your initial statement is correct, most people who get addicted to a drug are trying to cover for something else, the addiction itself will usually cause severe problems even after the original problems are solved. Just as an example, alcohol abuse causes serious sleep and dream disruption, leading to accumulated stress over the entire time of the addiction. That will cause psychological problems all on its own that must be dealt with. In addition, many people who get addicted to a drug stop emotionally maturing in entirety for the length of their addiction. If they are ever going to return to normal life, that also must be addressed.
