The Many Faces Of Beauty

What do you call beautiful? Is it a specific sight, a particular sound, something that simply smells wonderful, or anything that makes you feel good? People define beauty in many different ways. To some, beauty may be the face of a Hollywood celebrity. To others, beauty is defined by what’s inside an individual. We each have our own definition for what we think is beautiful. Ask yourself where you might see something that has true beauty.

What you or I may perceive as beautiful, may in fact, be ordinary to someone else. The fashion world may define beauty as a thin runway model, while others may think that she simply looks underfed. Beauty may be evident, or it may lie underneath the surface. A diamond is beautiful as a final result, but it certainly didn’t start out that way. The world is full of things that are beautiful on the surface, but it is the uncovering of something that at first appears to be plain or “ugly” that will give the true meaning. Often, we have to go beneath the surface to find the beauty that lies within.

Snowflakes are beautiful for their simplicity and the fact that no two are alike. They don’t last long, but they are a thing of beauty while they are here. Perhaps you find beauty in the face of a newborn child. The simple act of bringing a new life into the world may be how you perceive the word. Maybe you are the type of person that sees below the outer layer to discover the true beauty of an object that someone else would consider ugly. The idea and definition of beauty differ from person to person.

Our ears and our hearing bring sounds to us that are considered to be beautiful. A baby’s first word, the laughter of our friends, the peaceful sound of the waves lapping at the shore. Beauty in sound. The soft sounds of the world as it awakens to a new day. We hear, and we appreciate the sounds of beauty. We often need to stop and think about certain things when defining beauty.

Touch is beauty. The feel of a loved one’s hand, the softness of a baby’s skin, the gentle caress of the breeze, the feel of raindrops on our skin, the warmth of a fire on a cold winter day. All things that we can feel that are beautiful, and make us feel good. Have you ever taken the time to sit quietly and contemplate on the beauty in your life and what it means to you? You may be greatly surprised on what you think about as you sit. Things may come to mind that you never considered before. You may ask yourself how you missed the beauty of a simple object, or why you never perceived beauty in a particular way.

We are conditioned to think that we have to see something for it to be considered an object of beauty. Somehow we never think to bring all our other senses into the mix. Look around. Pick out the simplest thing you can find. Concentrate on what makes it special, or how you see it. Chances are, if you give yourself time, you will see that anything has some sort of beauty.
